Economic Benefits of Accessible Transport

Breaking down barriers to investment

What is the project about?

  • Funding for projects with a major accessibility component
  • The appraisal process in relation to projects with a major accessibility component
  • Whether disabled people are involved in the design and delivery of projects be they accessibility focused, or one component
  • The quality and content of business cases in relation to accessibility.
  • The decision-making process in relation to the above.
Two people are sitting facing each other in the foreground of the image. A woman is on the left and a man is on the right. They are both sitting at a large white round table. In the background are around ten people. Some are sitting and some are standing. In the deep background of the image is a large screen on a wall. The screen has the ncat symbol on it and reads National Centre for Accessible Transport.

What is the aim of the project?

  • To improve understanding of the challenges and barriers in developing business cases to secure funding for accessibility related improvements across all modes in the UK public sector
  • To provide recommendations that could support the development of business case for accessibility related improvements during transport appraisal

How will we carry out this project?

We will develop a list of stakeholders to engage with during the project including scheme promoters and appraisers, scrutinising authorities, decision-makers, policy makers, and key disabled people organisations.

We will also analyse accessibility schemes funding by analysing business cases and associated appraisal to determine the relative success of schemes with a major accessibility component compared to other transportation.

What have we done so far?
