Accessible Transport: Evidence to Inform Change

Three years of research from the National Centre for Accessible Transport

The National Centre for Accessible Transport (ncat) was established to address a critical gap in understanding how accessible the UK’s transport system truly is in practice. Funded by the Motability Foundation, ncat brings together research, lived experience and cross-sector collaboration to build a robust national evidence base on transport accessibility. This impact report sets out what has been achieved over the centre’s first three years, highlighting how evidence, innovation and partnership are being used to better understand and remove the barriers disabled people face when travelling.

Male wheelchair user with his back to the camera faces his family (female partner and young children, one girl and one boy who is only visible by his arm.) They are sitting in a train carriage next to the window with a table between them.

The findings presented here show that accessibility is shaped by the entire journey, from streets and stations to information, services and public attitudes. Drawing on the experiences of thousands of disabled people and informed by collaboration with policymakers, industry and organisations such as Policy Connect, the report demonstrates both the scale of the challenge and the opportunity for change. It also outlines how ncat is supporting more joined-up, consistent and accountable approaches to accessibility, helping to create a transport system that works more reliably for everyone.
