Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor – Research

Carl has a background in Manufacturing Engineering, spending his career in various sectors including automotive, aerospace and education.

He joined Coventry University in 2014 as the first Director of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME). This brings together business, research and education to accelerate the commercialisation of new technology in the low-carbon, manufacturing and transportation sectors. Known as the “UK’s first Faculty on the Factory Floor”, AME also provides a unique learning experience for undergraduate Manufacturing Engineers, where they are prepared for work through real live shop floor projects which enhance and contextualise the classroom learning they receive. In 2020, Coventry University received the Queens Award for AME, in recognition of the exceptional benefits delivered to Industry. Carl went on to be CEO of the Institute for Clean Growth & Future Mobility, the breadth of activities including advanced manufacturing, transport design, connected & autonomous vehicles, cyber security, low and zero carbon technologies, electric & hybrid powertrain. Carl is also the CEO for the National Centre for Accessible Transport (ncat).

Prior to his current role, Carl was employed by Rolls-Royce. As Head of Technology for Turbines, Carl delivered a range of new products into service, headed advanced process control using lean sigma and implemented business and operational improvements for the latest generation of Trent engines. He also led supply chain development and optimisation as well as cost improvement initiatives.

Previously, Carl was R&D Director for Dana Glacier Vandervell, where he introduced new products and processes for global automotive and industrial applications. “
