What is the project about?
The focus is to develop an accessibility capability and capacity assessment toolkit for local government.
The project will involve close engagement with local government stakeholders to trial the toolkit. There will be elements of co-design of the toolkit with accessibility professionals.
What is the aim of the project?
To design a transport accessibility capability and capacity assessment, and equip local authorities with the knowhow to conduct assessments. These assessments will be used to make sure they have staff with the right skills and expertise to design, build and maintain transport services and infrastructure that meet the needs of disabled people
How will we carry out this project?
We will design the toolkit using information gained through:
- Desk research e.g. capacity assessment toolkits for other areas (such as emergency response) and other resources relating to organisational capacity for accessibility and inclusion.
- • Interviews with expert stakeholders – e.g. local government professionals, accessibility consultants and auditors, disability and inclusion specialists and Disabled People’s Organisations. The Access Association will support stakeholder mapping through their local authority connections.
- • Review of previous relevant ncat research: in particular, Equipping Councils for Change.
- Guide authorities to co-produce assessments with local disabled individuals and Disabled People’s Organisations
What have we done so far?
Research for the toolkit is now underway.
