Document summary

There is increasing evidence of disabled people’s experiences of using public transport, but none specifically on the needs of young disabled people. The Motability Foundation recognised this gap in the research and commissioned Savanta to undertake a study involving 1200 young people aged 10 to 24 across the UK.

The research was guided by a group of young disabled people known as “peer researchers” and used mixed methods to provide rich insights. It explores young people’s diverse needs and experiences highlighting how a person’s identity, ethnicity and socio-demographics intersect with their disability and how it impacts their experiences of using transport.

The report shows that young disabled people face significant barriers when travelling, which “profoundly impacts their independence, social connections and ability to participate fully in society”.
